The Smallholder Alliance for Sorghum in Haiti (SMASH) is improving the livelihoods of Haitian farmers. The program was developed by Brasserie Nationale d’Haïti (BRANA) a Heineken subsidiary, as part of Brewing a Better Future, Heineken’s global sustainability strategy. Through a market-driven approach to developing a sustainable supply of high-quality, locally-grown sorghum for malted beverages that the brewery produces, SMASH lowers raw material costs, reduces foreign currency spending and strengthens the local economy.
Papyrus is instrumental in guiding this project toward its objectives of doubling the sorghum yield of smallholder farmers, increasing their income from sorghum by 75 percent and creating an economical, stable, and durable supply chain of local sorghum for commercial buyers
